Yardley Militia lists 1816 and 1831, analysis
These figures were compiled by the Discovering Yardley project in the 1960s.
Lists of men in Yardley liable for service in the militia, 1816 and 1831
Two lists showing men in Yardley parish liable to serve in the local Militia in 1816 and 1831 are available for study.
The 1816 list gives details by parish Quarters and refers to men aged 18 to 45. The 1831 list is in alphabetical order for the parish as a whole and gives particulars of men between 18 and 47.
In 1816, 250 men in 26 classes of occupation were liable, and in 1831 there were 372 in 60 classes of occupation. Exemption from the draw was claimed by 78 (31.2%) and 150 (40.32%) respectively.
Of those exempt, 43 (55.12%) and 101 (67.33%) were said to be ‘poor’; but with the Act of 1802-3 (43 Geo: C47) "for relieving families of militia men" authority undoubtedly had an eye on the possible cost of taking low-wage workers.
Physical unfitness accounted for 3 (1.28%) in 1816, and 16 (10.6%) in 1831. Substitutes were obtained by or for 14 (17.94%) in the former year and by 5 men (3.3%) in the latter.
It is of interest to note that in 1831 two men were exempt because they were too short – 5 feet 4 inches apparently being the minimum height.
From both lists it is evident that farming was the main occupation, being spread fairly evenly over the whole parish. It is true that the 16% so occupied in 1816 is halved by 1831 (8.33%). However we have to set against this the number described as labourers, from 21.6% in 1816 to 30.1% in 1831. Not all these men were farm labourers perhaps (some may have worked on the roads or in building) but most of them probably still were.
The number of men who gained a living by service is surprising – 53 (21.2%) in 1816, and 59 (15.86%) in 1831.
In 1816 the list includes 3 cordwainers, 1 shoemaker and 4 tanners; tilemaking is the occupation of 13 (5.2%) of the men listed. By 1831 the shoemakers had increased to 9 and there were now 4 cordwainers. Tilemakers had also increased, to 15, while brickmaking (7) and bricklaying (3) suggest mounting building activity. The number of maltsters is worth noting: 6 (2.4%) in 1816, 15 (4%) in 1831.
Finally attention may be drawn to the high numbers engaged in the metal trades. The first list gives 12 grinders, 2 gunmakers, 4 nailers and 11 whitesmiths. Collectively these account for 11.6% of the manpower. In 1831 there are 3 brass founders, 1 firearm maker, 1 goldsmith, 7 grinders, 1 nail factor, 1 locksmith, 14 whitesmiths, 4 wire drawers and 1 wire roller. The overall percentage is now just under 9%.
