Yardley Vicarial Tithes 1821 to 1822
A valuation of the Vicarial Tithes of the parish of Yardley, belonging to the Revd. Henry Gwyther, made in the years 1821 and 1822 by Richard Fowler
This information comes from an extract from the diaries and letters of the Rev Henry Gwyther, 1813-1836, donated to Birmingham Libraries. Please note, the surnames are not
necessarily in alphabetical order within the letters. Also, spelling may be different from that which may be expected. The Society has no further information beyond what is shown here, for example
what in particular attracted the tithe payment at this time. Tithes were divided into greater (rectorial) tithes, the product of the arable fields and value of stock, and lesser (vicarial) tithes,
raised from labour and minor produce, for example cottagers and day labourers. Editor's notes are in brackets.

Biographical note
Rev Henry Gwyther became Vicar of Yardley in 1821, and so the above list represents his wish to establish right away what was due to him. For a Victorian vicar, his family life perhaps holds a couple
of surprises. He married in 1812 at the age of only eighteen, and his wife was one Maria Philippa Artemisia Grant née Child, a widow who was around forty at the time. (Her own mother was heiress to
the Picton Castle estate, and her son with John Grant inherited the estate in 1823, changed his name to Phillips and was created a baronet in 1847, but had no issue). Henry and Maria had two
children, born in 1814 and 1820. Their son Rev James Henry later also inherited the Picton Castle estate, and changed his name to Phillips by Royal Licence: see here for the sequence.
Rev Henry's wife died in 1852, by which time the vicar was in his late fifties. However, in 1853 he married Francis Fanny Fewtrell, and produced no fewer than three more children, the last being born
in 1858, when he was sixty-four years old. Rev Henry died in post in 1872.
Below is a painting of Rev Henry, painted by one Luigi Lavelli di Capitani, who was an Italian political refugee barely out of his teens. He lodged for a short while at the vicarage, and painted this
portrait of his host. He died in 1852 of consumption at the age of twenty, and was, perhaps surprisingly, buried in the Gwyther family vault. The painting hangs in the Trust school in Yardley, and we
are grateful to Eileen Geen for allowing us to make a copy of it, and to a correspondent of hers and a descendant of Rev Gwyther, Mr Robert Gwyther, for information about Rev Gwyther and the
painting's origin.
